On March 2, 2024, a free eye camp was held by the joint initiative of Dwip Unnayan Songstha (DUS) and Noakhali Grameen Community Eye Hospital and Phaco Center for the Restore the light of the eyes of the elderly and underprivileged people living in remote areas. Total 102 person from Nijhum Dwip, chanandi & Dhansiri Union in Noakhali district have had the opportunity to undergo various eye examinations including cataract operations free of cost at this camp. This camp was placed at Noakhali Grameen Community Eye Hospital and Phaco Center, Maijdee, Noakhali.
At this day-long camp, Mr. Milton Ray Additional District Magistrate (Revenue), Noakhali inaugurated the eye service as the chief guest. He said, “We appreciate this service-oriented initiative by the Dwip Unnayan Songstha. Many impoverished individuals will regain their sight through this initiative. We all have to lend a hand towards those underprivileged people.” Dr. Shahadat Hossain, Advisor, DUS was presented there as special guest at this inauguration ceremony and the program was chaired by the organization’s Executive Director and Freedom Fighter Md. Rafiqul Alam.
The Executive Director of DUS stated that, “over five decades, I have observed that there is a need for both financial and material assistance to fulfill the specific demands of the distressed and impoverished individuals in our society.” Due to the lack of financial means, many distressed and impoverished individuals suffering from eye ailments do not have access to timely treatment. In response, DUS under the guidance of the Noakhali Grameen Community Eye Hospital and Phaco Center, has organized this eye camp free of charge. So far, approximately 700 people have undergone cataract surgery in such four eye camps.
Md. Tamzid Uddin, Credit Coordinator, DUS informed that one and a half thousand eye patients were registered at the eye camp. Among them, 47 women and a total 102 patients underwent cataract surgery. Additionally, eye examinations have been conducted for approximately 500 individuals.
